Adhesion Script

Adhesion Script is a new form of cursive handwriting for Czech elementary schools. This typeface is an inspired by traditional Czech writing and Comenia Script. Adhesion is a modern alternative which honours the history of Czech calligraphy, edited for the 21st century.

The process has started with writing the existing alphabet which was learnt in an elementary school. Usually, a lot of people use a combination of the connected and unconnected form of writing. We began to learn the whole alphabet as a connecting typeface. But in the Czech language is also a lot of diacritics, and as we learn in elementary schools, the diacritics need to be written at the end after writing the whole word. The more natural way is to write the diacritic right away rather than at the end. It is just, and you don’t forget any of the diacritics symbols. That was the first idea of how to change the actual handwriting.

My biggest inspiration was Comenia Scrip from Radana Lencová. Comenia is the result of a research project which examined the situation of handwriting in the Czech Republic. Now Comenia Script is used by 5% of Czech elementary schools. Although Comenia Script was a big inspiration for me, the Adhesion Script should avoid some things which Comenia did not. Comenia can be found too round and straightforward, the typeface should be more elegant, and a lot of critics say that children lost their creativity by writing with it. Comenia Script was the biggest inspiration for this project, and a lot of letters were designed similar, but more complex and with more significant right tilt.
